It’s been three years since the original BioShock debuted to critical acclaim, and Irrational Games has kept mum about their next project for all that time. Yesterday evening, they revealed to the games press that they’re returning to the property that they hit it big with: their next game is BioShock Infinite, and above, you can watch the same CG trailer I saw at the unveiling last night.
If you’d asked me to guess at what I’d be seeing before I went to the event last night, I would’ve bet a good deal of money that Irrational would be announcing a new IP. Perhaps that’s because I was hoping that their long-awaited game would be something fresh, just like BioShock was when it blew up the summer of 2007. But as I learned after seeing a ten-minute gameplay demo and speaking with Irrational Games personnel, a game doesn’t have to be new to be fresh.
For all the details, check out my full preview of BioShock Infinite, which is slated for release on PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and PC sometime in 2012. And keep your eyes on Destructoid all day for tidbits from my interview with Tim Gerritsen, director of product development at Irrational Games.
