Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine has a title that many may call farcically generic. The space marine has become such an archetypal character that a game of the same name just looks like a joke. Relic, however, asserts that it has the “original” Space Marine, although it does admit that the title is a teeny bit tongue-in-cheek.
“When we first mentioned the title to someone who didn’t know about 40K, they said ‘woah, talk about diving into the red sea’,” admits producer Andy Lang. “You know, Games Workshop bought the Space Marine name back in 1990, and were waiting to make a game for it. It just seemed to fit.
“And it’s a bit tongue-in-cheek, you know, we’re calling it Space Marine, and every game has a space marine in it, but we’re the original Space Marine. I was actually surprised that we had it, and that Games Workshop bought it. It was a good name, it was available, and it was strictly what it is. It’s a bit tongue-in-cheek though.”
Whatever the name is, the game’s looking hot. We’ve got more coverage for the game, which is slated for release some time in 2011, coming up. So keep reading Destructoid for all that chicanery!
