Namco Bandai’s awesomely-named Monster Hunter ripoff God Eater is looking to do quite well, if the demo numbers are anything to go by. Despite having gone live less than two months ago, the ten-mission PSP demo has already been downloaded (and presumably played) a million times. As for the reasons why, I’ve got a few guesses:
- Coming out in February, it’s timed well to catch PSP owners coming off of Monster Hunter Portable 2nd G (known as Freedom Unite here), who don’t own a Wii.
- The belts-and-zippers character design might appeal to folks less into Monster Hunter‘s goofy fantasy style.
- The swords can change into guns, and then into god face-eating monsters.
- It’s named God Eater!!!
Plus, characters and gear from the demo can be exported into the main game, so it’s a great incentive to hook otherwise ambivalent players.
I’m seriously stoked for seeing this thing make a debut on our side of the Pacific, so here’s to seeing it do well in Glorious Nippon. Now check out a new trailer embedded below.
