Shocking: people doubted the Nintendo DS

Back when the Nintendo DS launched no one had any clue it was going to be such a big hit and start printing all that money. As such you couldn’t blame developers for being a bit tepid about jumping into the development pool for the system. Once everyone saw that Nintendo’s handheld was raking in the dough, however — well, we’ve all seen what the DS section of our local Best Buy looks like.

It appears its a bit of a different story for the 3DS. All those developers who were too scared to jump into the DS aren’t planning on missing the money boat this time according to Nintendo CEO Saturo Iwata. ““I often travel abroad, so I have many opportunities to ask people in our subsidiaries about what our overseas software publishers think about Nintendo 3DS, and I know they have much stronger interest in it than when Nintendo DS was about to be launched,” he said recently.

He went on to say that it wasn’t just game developers showing this greater early interest, but Hollywood as well. “When it comes to the opportunity for them to be able to show 3D movies, however, people in Hollywood currently do not believe that 3D television sets will be able to spread into ordinary households with rapid speed. I have the impression that they see Nintendo 3DS as a strong candidate to become the very first 3D device to be able to spread into the mass market in massive volumes,” he said.

Captain Obvious signing out.
