Battlefield 3 is ‘standard def’ on 360 without install

If you’re not planning to install Battlefield 3 on your Xbox 360, you’re in for far less of a visual treat, with producer Patrick Bach claiming an uninstalled copy will be “standard definition.” As already revealed, the 360 version installs a “texture pack” to make the game much prettier. Sounds like it won’t look hot at all without it.

“The thing with the 360 is that you need to be able to give consumers a game where you don’t have to install it on a hard drive, because there are 360s without a hard drive,” he explained. “So we need to give you the option of installing it, rather than just demanding it. You could call it a ‘standard-def’ version for the 360 if you don’t have a hard-drive.”

According to Bach, you’ll notice a big leap between uninstalled games and installed ones: “It does make a difference, yes, absolutely. The whole engine is based around streaming textures, streaming terrain and a lot of other content.”

There you go. If you’re getting the 360 version and you rock a hard-drive, you better clear some room.
