Have you seen seen Layton’s hair in his debut 3DS title, Professor Layton and the Mask of the Miracle? He’s totally got an afro now, and I think it’s awesome. Reportedly, part of the game takes place in the present day, and the part of it takes place during Layton’s teenage years; a time in Layton’s life when he didn’t constantly wear a top hat. Maybe that’s why he needs a hat that big; to contain all that voluminous hair.
Layton’s do isn’t the only thing that got a makeover in Mask of the Miracle. It’s looking like the game’s world and characters will be rendered with polygon models this time around, which makes sense considering the console this game’s on. 3D polygons work better for a 3D console. Normally seeing a series switch from hand drawn graphics to CGI rendered bothers me, but the style in Mask of the Miracle seems to stay true enough to the series’ 2D roots. If all goes well, the game will provide a “best of both worlds” scenarios for existing Layton fans and those new to the series.
I wonder how many people are going to play this game first, then eventually head back to the other Layton games and say “Where’s his afro?”
