Despite the fact that Tony Hawk Shred had an absolutely pitiful sales performance, evil publisher Activision is still standing behind the increasingly obsolete skater. He is a skater, right? It’s so easy to forget. Who are we talking about again?
“I think it’s early to close the book on Tony Hawk Shred, because we are marketing it to kids, and it is a great gift, and the gift-giving season has already begun,” says Publishing CEO Eric Hirshberg. “That said … I think we have to ask all the smart questions and make some smart moves in terms of innovation to see if we can recapture people’s imaginations.
“The one question that I can answer, and remarkably so, is that Tony Hawk does really still have relevance and tremendous appeal for people. He is a lasting icon. He has that Michael Jordan-ish or Jordan-esque staying power, seemingly.”
I think Activision is being very optimistic if it thinks Shred will jump from 3,000 sales to a billion just in time for Christmas. In fact, t’would be a holiday miracle. Nonetheless, what do you reckon? Is Tony Hawk a sports icon, or just some guy on a skateboard?
