Alone in the Dark is coming back for more scares

Alone in the Dark

Head back to Derceto Manor

A horror series is getting a new lease on life under THQ Nordic. Alone in the Dark, a “reimagination” of the ’90s cult-classic survival horror game, is in development.

The game was revealed today as part of the THQ Nordic showcase, showing off the setting, gameplay, and more. Pieces Interactive is heading up development, as part of THQ Nordic under the Embracer Group umbrella.

Alone in the Dark will return to the Derceto Manor, with an original story that will still feature some characters and themes from the ’90s trilogy.

Players can once again play as either Edward Carnby or Emily Hartwood. Levels and cutscenes will change, depending on which character you’re controlling at that moment in time.

Pieces Interactive will try to capture a gothic American South look, mixed in with noir, the Roaring ’20s, and Lovecraftian horror. Mikael Hedberg, the writer behind Soma and Amnesia, is on board to pen the story for Alone in the Dark.

You are not alone (in the dark)

Details about the new game leaked out early today, ahead of the official reveal. While some of the wind was taken out of the sails there, it does seem like people are eager to see what Alone in the Dark will do with this second wind.

Remakes and reimaginings have gone pretty well for the survival horror genre as well. At least, they have for Resident Evil, which has been seeing steady remakes of many of its numbered games, with Resident Evil 4 due up next.

Alone in the Dark, meanwhile, has toiled in the shadows for a while. It hasn’t seen a new entry since 2015’s Alone in the Dark: Illumination, which was not very well-received. Even the entry before it didn’t go quite so well.

A return to the roots of the series might be what Alone in the Dark needs. We’ll see if Pieces and THQ can deliver it.
