They better bring back the headbutt
If you’re a horror gaming fan of a certain age, and you’re currently eagerly awaiting news of the teased Alone in the Dark reboot, then the wait is almost over, as THQ Nordic has announced that it will be holding a special showcase to offer up new details on the returning survival horror classic.
The new Alone in the Dark release will be a full-on reboot of Infogrames’ 1992 classic, and will see private investigators Edward Carnby and Emily Hartwood investigate a weird, desecrated mansion located deep in the Louisiana bayou. Developer Pieces Interactive notes that it wishes to capture the creepy, third-person gameplay and cosmic horror nature of the original release, brought up-to-date with modern technology and mechanics. The studio considers the reboot a true “love letter” to its predecessor.
Alone in the Dark has sort of stumbled through its own lifetime, with three groundbreaking but clumsy initial releases, an “ok” PlayStation comeback in 2001, and the notorious 2008 disaster that reviewed so poorly, it lead then-publisher Atari to threaten legal action against press outlets. With these strange and middling titles behind it, perhaps this aged franchise, essentially a forerunner to survival horror itself, can retake its place at the table. I have a fondness for AitD, and I hope that the new game is a real success, conceptually and financially.
The Alone in the Dark showcase will hit THQ Nordic’s YouTube and Twitch channels tomorrow, May 25, at 17:00 PT / 20:00pm ET / 01:00 BST. Alone in the Dark is in development for PS5, PC, and Xbox Series X.
