When we first heard about Animal Crossing: Happy Home Designer, it was easy to look at it as a stop gap measure to satiate people’s hunger for more of the series that would also work to cash in on the current amiibo craze. From the looks of it, the game uses old assets from Animal Crossing: New Leaf, and is 100% focused on home decoration, utilizing amiibo cards to give players new in-game items. Many assumed that the “game” would be a little unassuming app, like the Animal Crossing Plaza on the Wii U, as it certainly didn’t sound like it had enough new content to warrant a full retail release.
Well, you know what happens when you assume.
From the sounds of it, Animal Crossing: Happy Home Designer will cost 4,000 Yen in Japan, which is roughly $32 American. There’s also 5,000 Yen bundle that comes with the NFC reader that the standard 3DS will need to access the game’s amiibo cards. The cards come in packs that cost 300 Yen, so it’s easy to see how this game could eat into your wallet pretty rapidly. Nintendo also announced a new special edition Animal Crossing New 3DS console and a New 3DS face plate, which cost 22,000 Yen and 2,000 Yen, respectively. They’re all set for release in Japan on July 30th, 2015.
I’m guessing that the inevitable Wii U entry in the Animal Crossing series will utilize these amiibo cards as well, while also being a fully featured, actually new videogame. For that reason, it might be a good idea for Wii U owners to hold picking up Animal Crossing: Happy Home Designer, as it may be rendered relatively obsolete within the next year. But there I go, assuming again. Maybe we’ll hear something about that at E3 next week.
