Smile, though your heart is aching…
At this morning’s Xbox Games Showcase, it was revealed that one of the bleakest video games of all time is set to receive a sequel. S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 is now in development for Xbox Series X.
Loosely adapted from Boris and Arkady Strugatsky’s dark 1972 novel, Roadside Picnic, S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2’s suitably bleak trailer shows a dying world, engulfed in rot and social upheavel while lacking many resources. Among the happy sights on display are dilapidated towns, dying forests, and a rusted fun-fair – while deep in an abandoned bunker, strange mutations are afoot.
“With S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2, we are finally creating the thing we’ve wanted to make since the very beginning,” declared developer GSC Game World in a statement. “For the first time in the series, the Zone will be yours to explore as a post-apocalyptic open-world – one of the biggest ones to date. This is our most immersive world yet, and we are crafting it with the love and passion this setting deserves. Using our most advanced technology to date, the Zone has never been this gorgeous. And it’s yours to conquer – or to be lost in forever.”
The developer also released an FAQ, which you can find right here.
