Patience is a virtue
A few years back, Ubisoft put the yearly release schedule of Assassin’s Creed on ice. Wanting to focus its efforts on improving each entry, the announcement was a welcome reprieve for many fans after a few years of lackluster entries. Then came the announcement of Assassin’s Creed Odyssey less than a year after Assassin’s Creed Origins and everyone assumed Ubisoft was full of it. Turns out Odyssey happened mostly because Ubisoft had two studios working on new entries, as the series will be skipping a major entry in 2019.
Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot confirmed to GameSpot that a “fully fledged” Assassin’s Creed title will not be releasing in 2019. In his words, “It’s just because the team were working separately, so we have two games now, one year after the other. But next year you’re not going to have a fully fledged one.” This is unlikely to mean a spin-off is coming, though, as Ubisoft is dedicated to providing more content for Odyssey over the course of 2019.
Guillemot continued, “What you’ll have is lots of content coming on [Assassin’s Creed Odyssey]. The team really want to give, on a regular basis, some new possibilities for play, so when you get [Odyssey] this year, you’re going to get in for a couple of years, actually.” It seems like time off from the franchise has revitalized interest in the series, as fans have been flocking to Origins en masse.
“[The time] gave the team the possibility to really bring what they wanted to,” Guillemot explained. “The community has been responding very well to it and when I see what we are bringing with Odyssey I know that the community that got back in with Origins will be amazed.” Hopefully, that quality shows through in the end.
