Developer Larian Studios revealed in a Community Update on Steam today that the already massive cRPG Baldur’s Gate 3 will soon be getting even bigger with official mod support as part of Patch 7. The Patch will be split into two phases with the first beginning today in the form of a closed alpha for established mod authors in the community. In September Patch 7 will release publically adding the highly requested feature.
A universe of possibilities for Baldur’s Gate 3 via mods
Even though you can technically download and install mods in Baldur’s Gate 3 today, the process is a bit monotonous, especially for those not familiar with modding. Official mod support will streamline the process while also improving compatibility across the various platforms you can play BG3 on.
Support will be implemented via Mod.Io, a popular modding solution that allows developers to integrate modding into their title in a more managed format, allowing the mods to be downloaded and utilized on a variety of platforms.
At first, modding will launch on PC via Steam with support coming to Mac, PlayStation, and Xbox shortly after.
The Patch 7 update will also implement the Baldur’s Gate 3 Toolkit which will enhance the modding process for modders and players alike with the following features:
- Access the editor to create your own mods.
- Upload mods directly to mod.io servers.
- Load levels read-only to look at all the local entities, as well as the setup, and test your mods in-game while creating them.
- Get access to our internal editors for supported asset types such as textures and visual models, allowing you to override them directly in your mod through the developer interface.
- Publish your mod via the editor where it will be moderated and made visible in the in-game browser, or pack your mod locally to upload to a third-party site.
- Mod UIs through file editing. We will provide documentation that will explain how our internals are set up to solve mod loading/compatibility issues.
- Within Baldur’s Gate 3 itself, you’ll be able to:
- Download and manage your mods directly.
- Manage multiplayer and save game files through a verification UI.
The Patch 7 update for Baldur’s Gate 3 which will include official mod support but also implement new evil endings, bug fixes, and a trove of quality-of-life improvements is set to release this September.
