The second-screen feature of the new Battlelog service for Battlefield 4 will only be available on PlayStation 4, PC, and Xbox 360, DICE has confirmed to Engadget. Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 players won’t be able to use their tablet as a minimap in part because Battlelog is now “powered by the web,” according to assistant producer Jesper Nielsen.

The upside of this is that DICE can push out updates more quickly and the Battlelog mobile app will offer QR code scanning in an attempt to simplify the setup process. I always hated having to remember my login details for a secondary account on top of PlayStation Network and Xbox Live.

“Creating a second-screen experience during gameplay is something completely new for us, so we’re definitely treating it as a learning experience,” said Nielsen. “We’re super intrigued by these possibilities and early tests have showed that we’re going in the right direction, but to be frank, it will stand its real test once we get it out to the players and see how they use it, both when they play and don’t play. That will teach us a lot and help us innovate even more in this field.”
