Once again, strange things are afoot at the Circle K

At Cannes today, (yea, Cannes goes lowbrow sometimes), it was finally confirmed that Bill & Ted 3 is happening. Cue air guitars.

The movie, officially called Bill & Ted Face the Music, has been rumored and tossed around for years, but it’s a full go now with the production company shopping International rights at Cannes, and Orion Pictures distributing in the U.S. Returning as screenwriters are the first two film’s creators: Chris Matheson and Ed Solomon. Dean Parisot, who gave us Galaxy Quest, will direct.

The screenplay is apparently done, by the way. This isn’t some “They’re working on it” kind of thing. The movie is already in pre-production. We should definitely see Ted “Theodore” Logan and Bill S. Preston Esq. back on the big screen soon. The plot goes a little something likes this:

When we last met Bill & Ted they were time-traveling teenagers trying to pass history class and win the San Dimas Battle of the Bands. Once prophesied to save the universe with their Rock and Roll, middle age and the responsibilities of family have caught up with these two best friends, who are yet to fulfill their destiny. They’ve written thousands of tunes, but have yet to write one good one, much less the greatest song ever written.

With the fabric of time and space tearing around them, a visitor from the future warns our heroes that only their song can save life as we know it. Out of luck and fresh out of inspiration, Bill & Ted set out on a time-traveling adventure to seek the song that will set their world right and bring harmony in the universe. Together with the aid of their daughters, a new crop of historical figures, and some sympathetic music legends, Bill & Ted find much, much more than just a song.

The sad part here, of course, is that that traveler from the future can’t be Rufus, since George Carlin has passed away. Hopefully they get someone great to fill his shoes.

The press release also featured some quotes from everyone involved saying how “excellent” it is to be back in action. I feel that Alex Winter especially means this, considering the diverging career paths he and Keanu Reeves have taken since they first teamed up as the Wyld Stallyns.
