Now that you’ve downloaded the BioShock demo and played the hell out of it, you’ve already heard the musical work of composer Gary Schyman. Now you can read about how the BioShock soundtrack was created in this interview.
Schyman is the composer behind many awesome 80’s television hits like The A-Team, Magnum P.I. The Greatest American Hero, and has also worked on games like Destroy All Humans 1 and 2 and Full Spectrum Warrior: Ten Hammers. He talks with GameDaily BIZ about his work on BioShock, and about what he had to do to create the dark atmosphere of the game.
GS: The game is scary and dark indeed, so the music needed to capture that without being cliché. But BioShock is deeper than just scary, in that it is a tragically sad world that started with the best of intentions. Maybe a metaphor for the world today? But in any event I wanted to write music that was more than just scary – it had to be tragic and melancholy, at the same time it scared the blank out of you.
Schyman goes on to talk about how game music is evolving and how Hollywood composers are moving towards the game industry.
