‘Brave’ enough? Start halfway through Dark Souls II

‘You won’t have to follow a certain line’

From Software says it will give Dark Souls II players more freedom to explore the game world in their own way, even if that means letting them jump right into the deep end. “We’re hoping that if the player tries hard enough, or are willing enough, they could even start halfway through the game, depending on how willing or how brave they are,” director Yui Tanimura told Digital Spy.

“We realize in Dark Souls there were some certain orders, like ringing the bells or going to Anor Londo, which is not necessarily a bad thing,” he said. “In Dark Souls II, we’re hoping we can provide more freedom so things don’t have to necessarily be done in a certain order.”

This is exactly the kind of thing I want to hear. Being allowed the freedom to fight and die at the hands of way-too-powerful enemies because I’m not “ready” for the area is all part of the experience. I mean, trying to start with the Catacombs in Dark Souls is a memory I’ll never forget.
