The muscular and sexy Ben Kuchera at Ars Technica has been playing Bulletstorm on PC, and he’s not totally impressed. If you’re planning on playing People Can Fly’s critically well-received shooter on your computer, be aware that you’ll need to fiddle with it in order to make it decent.
Kuchera first noted that the game’s configuration files contain “large blocks of gibberish”, meaning you’ll need to find some tools to bypass the weak encryption and make any edits to the way the game runs. The game’s framerate is also locked to a maximum of 62fps — not great fun for high-end users.
“The game likewise doesn’t give you many options in adjusting the graphics from within the game, but the obfuscated .ini file will give you plenty to work with if you’re willing to tinker,” notes the report. “Don’t worry about learning console commands, since there is no console. Wonderful.”
Games for Windows Live is still mandatory, even when downloaded through Steam, and you can’t even use your mouse to navigate the in-game menus. It’s noted that, once you get inside the game and mess around with its obscured settings, it runs pretty well, but be warned that PC gamers — especially the advance ones — will need to deal with some bullshit in order to play the game at its fullest potential.
