Techland take the series back to the Old West
Techland’s Call of Juarez: Gunslinger, the latest entry in the Western FPS series, will hit PlayStation Network, Xbox Live Arcade, and PC on May 22. Even with a new trailer, I still don’t have a good grip on exactly what this game is.
After the disastrous modern-day entry, The Cartel, Gunslinger takes the series back to the Old West and places the focus on arcade shooting action. Though Gunslinger returns to a familiar environment, its leveling system, skill tree, comic art style, and faster pace should shake things up.
The story is also a lighter approach. Silas Greaves, the title’s “Gunslinger,” retells stories of his days with outlaws and legends of the West, letting the player relive them.
The first two Call of Juarez games are two of my all-time favorites, mostly for their scale, ambition, and atmosphere. With a focus on action and a jovial tone, I’m approaching this one with caution. At least Techland are trying something new, which doesn’t seem to be the case with Riptide.
