Be ready for it!
Ah the Chainsaw Man. Otherwise known as part of the Chainsaw Ganado subtype (yep, there’s multiple!), or the Chainsaw Guy. He’s a classic part of the Resident Evil 4 experience, and arguably in the top five when it comes to recognizable faces from the game. He’s still doing his thing in the Resident Evil 4 remake, so let’s take a look at some tips on how to take him down, and what you actually get in return for doing so.
How to kill the chainsaw guy in the first town in the Resident Evil 4 remake
Shortly after finishing up what is ostensibly the game’s initial intro and tutorial, you’ll come across the open area of the Village Square. This iconic Resident Evil 4 location once again hosts the Chainsaw Ganado, and yes you can kill him.
To initiate the encounter, you’ll want to get the attention of a nearby enemy (which will then kick off the area’s mob rush), and head into the building marked above (it’s in the far back left corner when you first enter the zone). A brief scripted scene will play, and the Chainsaw Ganado will start cutting down the door. This is your chance to turn around and immediately break open the barrel under the stairwell (which houses random items, including grenades). Turn around and run up the stairs to grab the shotgun and a guaranteed grenade from the dresser.
After you’ve completed this, the Chainsaw Ganado is nearly finishing cutting through the door. Walk down the stairs and aim a grenade at said entryway, then toss it as soon as it opens. Toss another grenade as that one hits (and another one if you have it). Even one grenade will significantly weaken the Chainsaw Ganado and soften him up.
As he’s getting up, hit him with several shotgun blasts, then prepare to walk back up the stairs to make your getaway. If you’re able, hit him with a few pistol shots (in the head if you can): if he stumbles and an icon appears above his head, walk up and melee him for extra damage. Jump through the window closest to the stairwell to kite the Chainsaw Ganado around some more, allowing you to get some easy shotgun or pistol potshots in as he attempts to climb the windowsill.
After hitting him with all your shotgun bullets, at least one grenade, and some pistol shots, he’ll go down. Just make sure to kite him around the perimeter of the village if you need more time, hitting him with pistol shots and running away in turn. If he gets close, you can parry his chainsaw attack with your knife (though it’ll severely decrease its durability).
What do you get for killing the chainsaw guy in the Resident Evil 4 remake?
After the Chainsaw Ganado is taken down, you’ll get an Emerald/treasure for your efforts.
This can be sold directly to The Merchant (who will first appear roughly 15 minutes from the village you’re in now), or kept to be placed in another treasure (which can be sold for more cash like an investment).
