Even if the game recommends you shouldn’t, you can
Advance Wars 1+2 Re-Boot Camp tells you everything it needs to in the name. You’re getting two games in one, and although you should probably play through the original if this is your first experience with the series, you can throw caution to the wind. It’s an especially useful feature for folks who already played the first two games, or just prefer the sequel. Here’s how it plays out.
Both games are playable in Advance Wars 1+2 Re-Boot Camp from the start
After starting up the Re-Boot package for the first time, you’ll need to play through the first few missions of the campaign to unlock most main menu features. To do that, you’ll select from one of two core games: Advance Wars, or Advance Wars 2: Black Hole Rising.
Although the standard route is to play through the original entirely to “unlock” the sequel, you can just play said sequel immediately. Here’s the full message that pops up when you try to do that:
“Caution! Warning! The Advance Wars 2: Black Hole Rising campaign contains content that may reveal secrets of the Advance Wars campaign’s plot. We recommend that you clear the Advance Wars campaign before continuing. Would you like to continue anyway?”
And that’s it! Just “continue anyway” and you’re good to go.
