By now you should already have a good idea of what to expect from the upcoming Xbox LIVE Arcade and PlayStation Network title Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix. It’s Super Street Fighter II Turbo in glorious high-definition, with completely reworked art designed by Udon Entertainment.
At CAPTVIATE, I had a chance to sit down and go head-to-head with the game’s producer, Rey Jimenez, and there were no surprises. The game is gorgeous as expected, and as it uses the game’s original code, so plays and feels just like you remember it. All of the redrawn stages were present, and all of the game’s characters were selectable, although we were limited to choosing four — Ken, Ryu, Akuma, and Dee Jay.
So why couldn’t we select the other 13 characters? Quite simply, they’re not done yet. As Jimenez pointed out to us, “They’re playable, but not pretty.” This was confirmed by another journalist who told me he snuck a peek, and said choosing Zangief mirrored Michael Jackson’s “Black and White” video where the game morphed between the classic art and the new art on the fly.
I’m sure we had all hoped the game would have been done by now (it seems like it was announced ages ago), but the team is making progress. Jimenez tells me that they’re shooting for an August release; a beta of the game featuring a playable Ken and Ryu will ship with the XBLA version of Capcom’s Wolf of the Battlefield: Commando 3.
