Today I went to the CES Gaming Pavilion, which is usually full of despair and sadness, especially for a games blogger covering a tech show. To my surprise, there was a huge crowd there. Was there actually something cooler than inflatable gaming chairs this year? Surely the crowd wasn’t there for the slightly-too-old booth ‘babes’ they had lined up.
As I came closer to the crowd, I noticed people drinking beer. Ah, someone was giving out beer. Good move, I thought. I rounded a corner, passed a line, and found that at the front of the line was a huge banner that showed Jesus Christ holding an Xbox 360 controller. Under the sign was an old man in bartender clothing manning a Sam Adams tap. Seriously?
Gamechurch.com is trying to turn the traditional Christian view on its head. Beer is a good way of doing that. So is the “Jesus Games” bumper sticker that they handed me. I was also handed some witnessing materials. Among them was a book titled “Jesus For The Win.” It references the Bible, The Matrix, and likens the Holy Book to a 500GB hard drive. I read all the materials. My brain is scrambled now.
Another promotional card featured a picture of Jesus with a headset on and a controller in his hand. The Twitter bird is sitting on Jesus’ shoulder. Really. They are having a Twitter contest here at CES. And again, promoting that they have free beer.
If you’re down with the idea that Jesus would be a gamer in the present day, you might want to check out Gamechurch.com. If you’re here at CES and like free beer, head to the North Hall.
