Happy Accidents
Prepare to grab your brush and beat the devil out of it, as publisher Finji has announced that charming-looking paint ’em up, Chicory: A Colorful Tale, will be launching on PS4, PS5, and PC this spring.
Developed by Greg Lobanov, previously responsible for the joyful Wandersong, Chicory tells the tale of a pupper artist who must wield a mystical artifact simply known as “The Brush” in order to recuse a fantasy world from its drab, monochromatic aesthetic. Guided by the titular spirit, our modest hero will bring extraordinary life, light, and color to the surroundings, using the power of art to solve puzzles, overcome obstacles, and generally put a little joy in some hearts.
“We’ve taken full advantage of the new DualSense wireless controller to bring a sense of depth to Chicory’s gameplay in a way we’ve never experienced before,” noted Lobanov on PlayStation Blog. “You can paint using the touchpad, and the controls are specially arranged to make it easier to do that. There is also an option to flip the controls so left-handed players can draw with their dominant hand if they prefer. Not to mention we’ve added lots of soft texture rumbles which makes the whole thing feel warm and cozy, like petting a cat.”
It seems a very apt metaphor. Given Chicory‘s overall pace and style, as portrayed in its marketing, it appears to be a very calming and relaxing adventure, stepping away from the general kaboom of video gaming to offer players an altogether cuter and more peaceful experience. Described as “Zelda in a coloring book world, with a dash of Animal Crossing,” it sounds like we could maybe all use a little Chicory in our lives right now.
