Crytek CEO Cevat Yerli has praised the PlayStation Vita as a piece of technology, but divulged his belief that it may be “too late” for Sony to stand up against the rising tide of mobile gaming and carve out its own sizable niche.
“The Vita is an absolutely fantastic platform but it will have a hard time, and it might be too late,” he told Develop. “I love Sony as a company, and we have great relations with them, but the Vita is going to have a hard time against the next generation mobiles and all the tablets.
“There’s also the 3DS investing in this market. It’s going to be a battle, and it will be about content and the platform’s ability to receive the content. Streamlined social connectivity will also be very important.”
The sentiment that Vita and the 3DS will struggle against mobile devices has become a running theme for this past year, and one that certainly bears consideration. I like to think that dedicated gaming handhelds still have a place in this market, but that’s to be decided by the consumers at large. We’ll have to just sit tight and see how the things unfold once all the players are on the map.
