Triborg looking cool
I never understood the popularity of Mortal Kombat‘s cyber-ninjas. I mean, you’d think if anyone could appreciate a pack of robots in a fighting game it would be me, but Cyrax, Sektor and the rest of the metal gang always seemed a tad too #Darksiders2 for my taste. Given the excitement surrounding Triborg, the 3-in-1 cyber-ninja set to arrive in the second Kombat Pack, I’m the odd man out. Apparently NetherRealm knows a popular character when it sees one and they’ve gone so far as to sweeten the cyber-pot by debuting a fourth variation for Triborg today, a robotic reincarnation of Cyber Sub-Zero.
During a live Kombat Kast at the ESL finals, the NetherRealm team showed off some of Triborg’s moves and variations in more detail, but they saved the best for last. After a thorough demonstration of the Smoke, Cyrax, and Sektor variations and a grisly fatality involving a car compactor, the crew dipped back in for a quick tease of a blue variation hurling Sub-Zero’s trademark ice balls.
Triborg will be the first, and so far only, MKX character to feature a fourth variation. It makes sense. The original ninjas were all just palette swap characters with different special moves, so in a way this is just carrying on the legacy. It’s also a nice way of giving something to fans of the individual ninjas without cluttering up the character select screen with too much metal. Now if they could just find a way to get Noob Saibot up in the mix, we’d be set (Sub-Zero could also have a fourth variation, just saying).
