Daily Mail: SWTOR players are torturing & abusing slaves

We’re not even a week into the new year and The Daily Mail has already published yet another hysterical attack on videogames. Star Wars: The Old Republic has come under fire from Rob Waugh, alarmed at the fact that Sith Warriors can enslave a female character (Vette) and treat her, y’know, like an evil Sith would treat a slave.

“Gamers playing the hit online game Star Wars: the Old Republic are torturing and abusing a female ‘slave’ character with punches and an ‘electric shock collar’ — and enjoying it,” writes the Mail. “The character comes with a ‘shock collar’ that allows gamers to ensure ‘obedience’.”

The Mail admits that players do have the option to treat Vette kindly, but adds that “the option to treat the character decently does not seem to have been enormously popular with players.” Naturally, the article offers no evidence to prove the popularity of any player choices, instead just lifting paragraphs from a single sarcastic Kotaku post

It wouldn’t be a Mail article without a serving of hypocrisy, though. CVG points out that, while trying to shock its conservative, morally upstanding readers with this sick filth, the publication’s other articles of the day include bikini-clad babes and sideboob photographs. Classy!
