In its six year history, Dungeons & Dragons Online has gone through a significant number of changes, not least of which was the change from a subscription model to free-to-play in 2009. But unlike many other titles in the genre — some of which are younger than DDO — it has never received an expansion. Up until now, that is. Turbine has announced that this summer players will be able to leave Eberron, travel to the Forgotten Realms and venture into the Underdark in its first ever expansion: Menace of the Underdark. Killing Drow, hell yeah!
Along with wandering around caverns, fighting Drow and getting freaked out when a spiderweb brushes your face, players will also be able to explore some of the surface, including the village of Eveningstar. The level cap has been increased to include epic levels up to 25 and the shape-shifting, nature loving Druid class has also been added. This is all tempting me to return to the game, Eberron isn’t really my cup of tea. But the Underdark? That’s a whole different story. In the end it will really depend on the price, it’s a premium expansion.
