Releasing in 2020 for $4.99
Dead Cells has been super generous with free updates, and that post-launch support is not coming to an end anytime soon. Evil Empire is planning to continue releasing updates “at the same steady rhythm and of the same quality as seen in 2019.” That said, I think many of us are ready for some paid DLC.
The first DLC for Dead Cells, The Bad Seed, is launching in the first quarter of 2020 with two new biomes (The Arboretum and The Swamp), another boss, more foes, and new weapons – including a massive two-slot scythe, the first of its kind. There’s also talk of a mushroom companion. I must protect it.
For context, “the two new levels and their monsters are alternatives to The Courtyard/Toxic Sewers and The Ramparts/Ossuary/Ancient Sewers, with the boss designed to be on par with The Concierge, so hopefully it’ll spice up your early game runs once you’ve played through the core game.”
The Bad Seed will cost $4.99, which feels reasonable. I’ll happily pay that for biomes and bosses.
As for Motion Twin, the original creative force behind Dead Cells, they’re “off having fun making prototypes and brainstorming,” according to Evil Empire’s Steve Filby, who is a part of the effort to keep the game going. “We’ve got our noses to the grindstone, only really coming up for air to check in with them to see if we’re on the right track, as they have to sign off on everything we do.”
The team hosted a reddit AMA for Dead Cells earlier today, and one response jumped out at me: “Boss rush mode comes on the table on a regular basis, but we always had something else more urgent to do. Hopefully, we will have the time to build an interesting boss rush mode at some point in the future.”
This game has legs!
