Dead Space: Extraction takes place three weeks before the original Dead Space. Its events run parallel to the anime and other assorted pieces of fiction. You’ll get to watch the invasion unfold and even meet characters from the peripheral content. I know this because the video below the fold told me this.

It was easy to dismiss Extraction when it was announced — on-rails shooters tend to walk on the terrible side. But if you take Visceral’s word, Extraction will be every bit as cool and tense as the original title. You can’t ask for more than that.
