2023 and 2024 have been banner years for fantasy anime thanks to two shows in particular: Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End and Delicious in Dungeon. Now that the latter has aired its 24th episode, plans for a second season have officially been confirmed.
There’s no release date at the time of this writing, but just knowing that Delicious in Dungeon season 2 has been greenlit is enough to sate our mighty appetites for now. While we wait for more info on the followup, a new trailer and key visual made their way online along with the reveal.
Based on the manga of the same name by Ryoko Kui—known as Dungeon Meshi in Japan—Delicious in Dungeon really is the ideal adventure for fans of dungeon-crawling RPGs. The story follows Laios and his party, who end up losing all their money and provisions after a powerful dragon attacks them deep in a dungeon. They also lose a key party member in the process, so their primary objective is to return and save Laios’s sister Falin from the dragon’s maw before it’s too late.
With the party now strapped for food and coin, though, they’re going to have to get creative if they want to survive long enough to find her. That’s where Laios’ brilliant plan to “eat the monsters” comes into play. Delicious in Dungeon quickly becomes a dungeon foodie travelogue, as Laios enlists the assistance of Senshi, a veritable gourmand of the grotesque. Fans of bestiaries, I implore you to watch.
Pipin’ hot provisions
Delicious in Dungeon works for a lot of reasons. It has a strong cast of characters, fantastic designs and animation from anime studio TRIGGER (Kill la Kill, PROMARE), and countless inventive ways to catch, prep, cook, and devour the denizens of the deep. It’s not all lighthearted fun and games, and the latest trailer above closes out with a foreboding tease of what’s to come.
Yoshihiro Miyajima (episodes of DARLING in the FRANXX, BNA: Brand New Animal) directed the first season of Delicious in Dungeon, which is available to stream on Netflix. Kimiko Ueno (Little Witch Academia) handled writing duties, with Naoki Takeda (chief animation director for BNA) adapting Ryoko Kui’s original character designs for the screen. Whichever staff members return for the second season, let them cook.
