Destiny 2‘s Guardian Games All-Stars is here a bit early this year, but it brings something unique. The game gets its first hoverboard via the event, called a Skimmer. While one Skimmer is free for Guardians to use throughout the event, it requires some work before you wholly own it. The other available Skimmer doesn’t require much time spent with the Guardian Games but requires a purchase through the Eververse Store instead.
Skimmers were announced through the Feb. 29 This Week in Destiny post. Functioning in much the same way as Sparrows, the new vehicle allows Guardians a different way to zip around. In addition to the new look, Skimmers allow players to break into a grind just about anywhere vehicles are permitted. This enables players to essentially fly around, as the holo-grind rails appear out of thin air with the press of a button.
Skimmers are a game changer for Destiny 2. If not only for the legitimate mobility and exploration advantages, then surely for the opportunity to look rad. Getting your first ride on a Skimmer is easy, but keeping the vehicle is another matter entirely.
Renting a Skimmer
Every player participating in the Guardian Games will have an opportunity to try out a Skimmer. Visiting Eva Levante in the Tower will kick things off, giving players a quest that explains how the event works. Once this introduction is complete, Guardians will have access to their first Skimmer: Allstar Vector.
However, access to the Skimmer is limited to the three-week Guardian Games event. Thankfully, there is a way to hang on to the Allstar Vector beyond the friendly competition. It just involves players taking a more active role in Guardian Games All-Stars.
Owning Allstar Vector
If players want to call the Allstar Vector their own, it will require some practiced participation in this year’s Guardian Games. Once introductions are complete, Eva Levante will offer up the Drop In quest for the event. Drop In is the key to owning the Allstar Vector, but it might take quite a bit of time to complete.
There are three possible ways to complete Drop In, with each objective relying on a bit of persistence, skill, or luck, respectively. One option for completing the quest is by achieving a Medallion Score of 1,200. Players earn Medallion Score by dunking Medallions in the Tower, with higher quality Medallions earning more Score. This option will likely require the most time spent participating in the Guardian Games, as even Platinum Medallions only net 15 Medallion Score.
Another way to earn Allstar Vector is by clearing the Guardian Games: Competitive Nightfall playlist with a top 10% score. This can be a daunting task. It means players want to be in a highly communicative Fireteam to coordinate a high score. Achieving a higher score is centered around earning Vanguard Medals, with more unorthodox maneuvers, like emoting before finishing enemies, earning tons of points.
The final path to the Allstar Vector is based around the new Focus Activity feature. The Focus Activity is viewable at the top of the Tower map and starts every few hours. Players participating in the Focus Activity are rewarded with reward packages, with the Class that does the overall best earning a Focus Activity winners package. Players who claim three of these winners packages complete Drop In. While this could technically be done in a single day, the same Class would have to win just about a full day’s worth of Focus Activities.
The other Skimmer
The Allstar Vector isn’t the only Skimmer available in Destiny 2. If players can’t be bothered with the Guardian Games and the whole Medallion dunking jazz, there’s another option. Players can purchase a Skimmer from the Eververse Store for a chunk of the only-purchasable-with-real-money Silver currency. The Skimmer in question is called Winged Wolf, themed after the Gjallarhorn Exotic and part of a bundle.
Winged Wolf certainly looks cool — a sleek forked design accented with wings and rocket thrusters. The Skimmer is natively white and gold, with a bit of red for decals. However, if players want to grind along in Exotic style, this Skimmer costs a pretty penny. As it’s only available as part of the Gjallarheart Gear Bundle, it’s not purchasable by itself. That means Guardians must fork over 2,500 Silver ($25) for the accompanying ship, Ghost shell, and shader.
Of course, if you don’t want to take the hit for the Gjallarhorn-themed Skimmer, Allstar Vector is available completely free for all players. It will just mean dusting off that competition gear and heading into the Guardian Games.
