‘We want somebody to be able to go buy a disc and never have to go online’
Marvel’s Avengers is finally out in the open, and Jordan has a massive E3 preview that will tell you pretty much everything you need to know about it.
Although “we promise it won’t be entirely a games as a service title” and “we won’t have loot boxes” aren’t worth any major amount of praise, Crystal Dynamics boss Scott Amos has elaborated on their vision with Gamesindustry.biz. Speaking to the outlet, Amos explains that “We want somebody to be able to go buy a disc and never have to go online. You don’t have to. You can have a complete experience and have fun. But there’s all this cool new stuff that’s coming, all these new heroes, you have to go online for that stuff. That’s how it’s going to work.”
In short, it will not be an online-only game based on that statement, and it will feel complete without the need for post-launch updates (some of which are free). He re-iterates that cosmetics will be how the game is monetized, with “no gameplay paywalls.” Amos also intimates that they are working closer with Marvel than the typical arrangement, likely because Marvel doesn’t want this to fail given how monumental of a release it is.
I’m in full marketing hype shut down mode for this. We got a hands-off demo at E3 to ponder and lots of vague promises that the game would not be overmonetized, but a capable studio at the helm. This is one of the biggest “wait and see” projects in recent history.
