Did no one see Sword Art Online? This won’t end well
Life is cruel sometimes. I’m almost blind in one eye and can’t see in 3D, so most 3D and virtual reality headsets don’t actually work for me. I’ve tried the Oculus Rift, and it was just like being sat in a cinema rather than the world-changing, orgasm-inducing experience everyone else likes to make it out to be. And yet here I am, bringing you news about Valve and HTC’s combatant in the VR wars. That sounds way cooler than it actually is, trust me.
The news is that they have opened up applications for the developer kits of the HTC Vive. The goal seems to be to get the Vive in to the hands of as many developers as they possibly can by giving them out for free and in continual waves. They’re not particularly choosey about who they hand out kits to either by the look (hah) of it, saying that they want to “support as many VR content creators as possible.”
The dev kits aren’t available to buy, at least not until they inevitably hit eBay, but commercial units will be available for those with two adequately functioning peepers by the end of the year.
