Disney+ adds a show about Cassian Andor to its future lineup

You know, the gruff guy from Rogue One?

Disney is wasting no time with announcing shows for their streaming service that is slated to launch next year. While confirming the rumors that a show based around everyone’s favorite bad boy Loki were indeed true, Disney CEO Bob Iger announced that a show based around Rogue One character Cassian Andor would start production next year. The show will take place before the events of Rogue One and show what made Andor into the callous calculated operative that he was in the Star Wars prequel. So this is a prequel to a prequel. Whew boy.

Diego Luna will return to play the lead role. Speaking on his return to the Star Wars universe: “I have so many memories of the great work we did together and the relationships I made throughout the journey. We have a fantastic adventure ahead of us, and this new exciting format will give us the chance to explore this character more deeply.” Luna returning is great as overall I liked his acting in the movie, I just didn’t care for the character all that much.

I enjoyed Rogue One because it felt like they were taking a well-explored film genre and throwing a Star Wars skin over it, which is great. That being said, they tried to shove too many characters into the mix which didn’t allow for the characters to be fleshed out. While I’m not overly looking forward to having another streaming service in the mix that will gate me out of potential things I want to watch, this show could prove to be just what is needed to turn Cassian into a fully explored character.

No word on who is attached to be the showrunner or even a planned release date but with the service not even launched yet, I’d expect this to come about in 2020 at the earliest.
