Fate/Samurai Remnant is the latest entry in the Fate series, and it has impressed critics enough to score some great reviews. This will undoubtedly bring many newcomers to the franchise, and some of you may be wondering if any preparation is required before jumping into the game.
The Fate franchise spans several mediums, including anime, light novels, manga, and video games. Attempting to consume everything before playing Fate/Samurai Remnant would be a massive task that would take you months.
Fortunately, that won’t be necessary, and you’ll have no problem playing the game without prior exposure to the franchise. Of course, there’s plenty to enjoy for series veterans as well. It continues the Holy Grail War and features several references that’ll appeal to those familiar with the franchise.
Novices and Veterans welcome
Fate/Samurai Remnant features a mostly self-contained story. It takes place in 17th century Edo, and it centres on Miyamoto Iori and his Servant spirit Saber. You don’t need to know anything before playing to grasp the story, as things are explained in detail.
The combat is somewhat complex, featuring combos, techniques, valor strikes, and spells. It can be overwhelming, but the game does feature a Primer where you can brush up on any gameplay concepts you may have forgotten. Just open the main menu, head to the “Records” tab, and you’ll find the Primer there.
In short, Fate/Samurai Remnant is a mostly standalone game that’s very accommodating to newcomers. Nevertheless, it doesn’t alienate returning players who’ll find plenty that expands the Fate universe.
