Does your character matter in Disney Illusion Island?

Selecting a character in Disney Illusion Island

When you begin your journey in Disney Illusion Island, you’ll have the difficult choice of selecting one of four characters: Mickey, Minnie, Donald, or Goofy.

Players can choose from any of these classic Disney characters to explore the titular Illusion Island. At a glance, I wouldn’t blame you for thinking there might be some differences between them. However, they all play exactly the same. I know it sounds crazy to think that Goofy is just as capable of running and jumping as Minnie is, but that is indeed the case. I imagine he got lots of practice running after Max.

That said, your choice isn’t totally meaningless here either. You will have the occasional voiced line from your character as you play, so I wouldn’t necessarily recommend Donald unless you like hearing him talk.

Additionally, the cast does have some significant visual differences between them. For example, when the party finds upgrades that let them, say, float in the air, each character receives a different tool. Mickey and Minnie usually get fairly normal items while Donald almost always gets something that looks like it barely works. Goofy, appropriate, gets very silly items for comic relief. Again, each character plays the same, so you can safely pick your favorite.

Otherwise, your character choice doesn’t matter in Disney Illusion Island. Even if you’re playing by yourself, everyone will still appear in cutscenes and story sequences. You can also pick a new character every time you continue your save file. In other words, just focus on having fun with your best Disney pals. Even if you’re like me and just played as Goofy for the entire campaign.
