Hey, Kingdom Hearts fans are used to it – this is the default setting
Kingdom Hearts 4 updates do not seem to be in the cards for the near future, a new Famitsu interview confirms.
Series steward and KH4 director Tetsuya Nomura notes that the team is “prioritizing development,” and there are “no plans” for Kingdom Hearts 4 updates for a while. That said, he did provide a few details that inform the reveal. Nomura says that although the trailer was crafted via Unreal Engine 4, the game is actually using UE5 for the final version: which is something they could pivot to in future trailers.
The team is in a tricky position with Kingdom Hearts in general, given the high expectations; but also the announcement schedule as a whole. It’s the 20th anniversary of Kingdom Hearts, so the team should give fans something. With that said, it’s heavily implied that barely any progress has been made for this presumably lengthy action-RPG, and Nomura and company have their work cut out for [x amount of years]. No Kingdom Hearts 4 updates in years make Homer go something something.
It’s the classic “early trailer” Square Enix strategy that’s criticized year after year. At this point we’re used to it though, and hopefully by the time Kingdom Hearts 4 actually arrives, it delivers. For me, it’ll heavily hinge on what Disney property worlds are included. Doing something drastic like going in a Star Wars direction would be interesting: and prior games even go hard on the lightsaber motif as it is.
