August is looking to be a big month for Nintendo platforms. New Super Mario Bros. 2 will be in one corner, launching the 3DS into the stratosphere once again, while Dragon Quest X will also be in the other corner, granting the Wii one last revival before the console eventually flatlines.
DQX will appear on August 2 as a standalone game for 6980 yen (~$86) or as a bundle that comes with a USB memory card for 8980 yen (~$111). If you buy the standalone (which will ship on two discs, by the way), you’ll need to provide your own memory card with at least 16 GB. Since this is an MMO, there is a pricing plan in place: players can buy a 30-day pass for 1000 yen (~$12), a 60-day pass for 1950 yen (~24), or a 90-day pass for 2900 yen (~36). The game will offer 20 days free out the box, and Square Enix will be sporadically holding “Kids Times” events that will likewise offer free playtime.
Nothing was mentioned about the Wii U version, though that information will most likely come to light some time after the Wii U’s grand E3 re-unveiling. Additionally, these details only apply to the Japanese release — I find it highly unlikely that Square Enix will charge monthly fees for Western territories where Dragon Quest is not as hot.
