Even if you aren’t well-versed in Greek mythology, you’ve undoubtedly heard about Medusa’s deadly gaze. The entertainment world has used it in one way or another, from Clash of the Titans to God of War. Now, once again, she has made her mark in Dragon’s Dogma 2 as the very first boss in the game. But rather than beheading her, players have discovered a quicker way that ties in with Greek mythology’s Perseus.
Not many weapons can take down Medusa, yet the Daughter of the Evening shield just might be the ultimate tool to finally get what she deserves. Those who wield the shield while she’s performing her fatal gaze will cause her to turn to stone, killing her in an instant. Though it’s not recommended, it could be possible not to go in with any other weaponry at all, thanks to the shield’s reflective properties.
While Dragon’s Dogma 2 is pretty secretive when it comes to guidance, the Daughter of the Evening’s abilities are pretty well laid out. The shield’s description states that it “reflects the faces and baleful powers of foes back upon them.” It becomes even more apparent when a Decayed Medusa Head sits in the chest next to the shield’s location. Despite all its hints, I don’t think I put two and two together, but at least the Dragon’s Dogma 2 community caught on.
The shield itself connects to Greek mythology’s Mirror Shield, bestowed by the goddess Athena. The son of Zeus, Perseus, used it to conquer the snake beast, Medusa, similar to Dragon’s Dogma 2.
If you’re wondering where to find the Daughter of the Evening, it lies inside a chest of the Vernworth Castle Vault. The vault requires a key from the Ancient Battleground to uncover Vernworth’s hidden secrets.
The only problem with the shield method is the fact that it doesn’t reward you as much as a normal takedown. More specifically, Medusa’s head will be out of reach as her stony corpse blows in the wind. The technique still has its advantages, regardless. One, you don’t have to go through the hassle of the semi-long fight. Two, it does reward plenty of XP and the An Eye for an Eye achievement.
It’s just plain fun to watch Medusa get a taste of her own medicine. Plus, it’ll give you a sense of justice for all those poor souls she turned into stone.
