Echo of the Wilds showcases survival and shirtlessness

Wait, what?

I have watched the trailer for Echo of the Wilds twice now, and I still do not really know what to make of it. Developer Anthony Case describes it as a “puzzly narrativy adventure,” which I can sort of see. The main character wakes up in a forest and must survive, using tools and other items to manage hunger, thirst, and the like. Presumably to protect from ultraviolet rays, there is a dainty sun hat, and he eventually puts a shirt on.

But then there are other things going on in the trailer that just make me go “hmm.” The pixel art is augmented by more modern lighting and particle effects, which fuel nightmare-inducing glowing face orifices. Then there’s a scene where the protagonist is transported to a dingy living room, away from the dangers of the wilderness. Something fishy is going on here, and I may just be intrigued enough to try to find out what.

Echo of the Wilds is set to release for PC and Mac on March 16, with plans to start up a Steam Greenlight campaign at that time. Before then, it should be available on Indie Game Stand, for an initial sale price of $4.99, down from the final price of $9.99.
