Electronic Arts planning ‘platform exclusives’ on Origin

Following news that Crysis 2 was yanked from Steam, Electronic Arts publisher has confirmed that yet more exclusives are planned for its proprietary digital download service. Ladies and gentlemen, the PC equivalent of the console wars is about to begin, and anyone can play!

“We are going to continue to be great partners for our retail channel partners as they evolve their business models to account for digital,” said EA’s Frank Gibeau. “But at the same time you talk about platform exclusives like Halo or Uncharted, EA’s going to have some of our own platform exclusives.

“I think long-term you’ll see we believe in reach so we will have other digital retailers for out products because we want to reach as many audiences as possible. But at the same time if we can use exclusive content or other ideas to help grow our audience then we’re going to do that because we’re growing a platform.”

Terrific. I can’t wait until every publisher has its own unique download service that we have to sign up for. Why stop there, though? Why not have every game carry its own subscription? Why don’t we just sign our personal details over to every developer on Earth and carry 100,000 passwords in a huge ledger in order to play some videogames? Might as f*cking well.
