Everything that happened at the PS5 deep dive event, including the fact that we haven’t even seen the damn thing yet

Martina McBride voice: ‘This one’s for the devs’

I hope you were like most of us industry professionals and expected a very technical talk when the venerable Mark Cerny was name-dropped as the keynote speaker for a pre-recorded GDC talk. No? Well, damn.

Sony gave us specs and vague promises for the PlayStation 5 today, without mentioning any potential launch windows or pricing details or what it looks like. We got a cool look at a Jak II map that Jordan was really into. And Sony confirmed that many “popular” PS4 games will be backward compatible at launch, but did not give us a list or talk about any prior generations (which are assumed to be a non-factor).

Currently, everyone is buzzing about the big stat: the “5.5GB/s (Raw), Typical 8-9GB/s (Compressed)” data transfer speed IO throughput, which trounces the Xbox Series X’s “2.4 GB/s (Raw), 4.8 GB/s (Compressed, with custom hardware decompression block).” But that’s about it.

This very techy GDC talk was confusingly marketed at consumers, and a lot of people are not impressed.
