Ex-Monolith devs’ Betrayer joins Steam Early Access

Explore a lost colony full of spirits

Betrayer caught our eye the other day. It’s in development at Blackpowder Games, which is better known as the six-person team made up of former Monolith Productions devs. Perhaps just as importantly, it’s the game with that striking art style and tale of a ghost-filled 17th century colony — not your average title, in other words. Alasdair told you Betrayer would be hitting up Steam Early Access this month and that time has come.

The team is really hoping to leverage the platform in a meaningful way, from the sound of it. This build, described as being in alpha, contains an intro area and a single large region to explore, plus a range of weapons like bows, muskets, and even a throwing axe.

Blackpowder’s primary goal is to get feedback on its storytelling: “Betrayer focuses on exploration and discovery with minimal explanation or guidance, so usability is a major concern. We want to make sure you have enough information to be able to find your way through the game and form theories about what might be happening, but we don’t want to over-explain or spell things out, so we hope to rely on community feedback to find a rewarding balance.”

For $13.49, I don’t know that I’d be willing to jump in straight away, but it’s one to watch. “In the coming days and weeks, we will open up new areas to explore that feature new enemies, weapons, gameplay mechanics, characters, and mysteries,” writes the studio. “Your feedback will help us to refine existing gameplay and prioritize upcoming features and fixes, so please let us know what you think on the forums!”
