“Starting at $39.99”
A lot of us have been antsy when it comes to a Sonic Origins release date, and it finally came this morning straight from Sega to Destructoid’s inbox: June 23, 2022.
As Sega points out, this is set to release on “Sonic’s birthday,” and will celebrate the series across several classic games. The final lineup is:
- Sonic 1
- Sonic 2
- Sonic 3 & Knuckles
- Sonic CD
So the “digital standard version” of the game is $39.99, with a digital pre-order bonus of 100 Medallions, a mirror mode unlock, and a letter box (Mega Drive Pattern). It’s set to release on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X, and Switch. It’ll sport a classic mode (featuring “the original game presentation, with finite lives and a game over screen”), an anniversary mode (“full screen display, with infinite lives”), a missions, medallions, and museum mode (you can earn medallions by “completing various missions throughout the games,” and unlock new content from the in-game vault, including a “special stage”). This is on top of the “all-new visual presentation, animation, and enhancements” makeover.
If you spring for the “Digital Deluxe Edition,” it’ll cost you $44.99, and you’ll get “difficult missions,” a regular letter box, extra characters in the main menu, an “island camera” on the main menu, character animation in music playback screen, and “exclusive tracks from Mega Drive titles” (which is also going to be a separate $3.99 pack if you want). That tiered pricing model definitely isn’t going to alienate anyone!
Pre-orders will go live at this link. Despite the weird upsell on the digital deluxe version, I think I’m ready to buy a Sonic collection for the 10th time here. Getting it on Switch would hit the spot.
