No, Freddy. You are the demon
Turns out I was already behind the times when I made a goof about lore videos in my Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 review. This excellent YouTube video from The Game Theorists takes a look at a possible deeper meaning behind the first game in the series and its connection to a ghastly real-life crime. Spooky stuff!
Some elements of the theory have been jossed by the sequel, but the veracity of this specific video isn’t the important thing to me. I find it fascinating to watch people look at the games they play a little deeper, to try and make connections to other ideas than just accept what the game presents at face value. It’s why I’ve spent so many hours watching lore videos for Dark Souls and reading articles speculating on the meaning behind games like The Binding of Isaac and Braid.
It’s easy to get cynical about the YouTube cottage industry phenomenon. But I think lore videos like this legitimately add something to the experience. Even if they’re not 100% right or what the creator of a game intended, it’s an interesting thought experiment to look at these games from another angle.
