Game with the Dtoid community
Good afternoon! Welcome to Destructoid’s Friday Night Fights!
In case you missed it, Mr. Andy Dixon has handed over the reins to yours truly for all things community playdate-related. What does this mean exactly? Well, it means we no longer have to put up with that silly ass Andy Dixon anymore. It also means that I will be spearheading all of the great community driven events here on Destructoid!
Many of you are familiar with our Friday Night Fights, but did you also know that we have several other community driven play dates throughout the week? It’s true!
Here’s a quick recap:
Team Fortress 2sdays – TF2sdays is all about Team Fortress 2 and it is almost always hosted by our one and only Swishiee! Swishiee has been hosting TF2sdays for as long as I can remember and he almost always has an amazing turnout. Love Valve? Love hats? Love TF2? Well then, why don’t you stop by our front page posts every Tuesday afternoon for the details!
Hump Day Havoc – This is a relatively new event, started by Destructoid’s own Nihil. Hump Day Havoc has all you need for that mid-week mayhem (hey, mid-week mayhem, that’d make for another great community event — hint, hint). Right now Hump Day Havoc has been hosted exclusively by Nihil; however, we would love to see this event grow. If anyone is interested in hosting something each Wednesday, any console, handheld or PC game is welcome, and remember that these events are 100% community-driven, which means we need YOU to host!
Friday Night Fights – This is the one: the longest-standing community-driven event on Destructoid. Planning for Friday Night Fights starts in our community forums, because again, this is a community-run event, with games being hosted by members of the site. We typically have people hosting games on the PC, PS3, Xbox 360, Wii/Wii U, Vita and 3DS. If it can be played by more than one person, it can be hosted! Major props to Trev, Cornflake, SuperMonk4Ever, Smurfee McGee, PhilKenSebbin and again, Swishiee, for consistently making forum posts and blogs to keep this event alive!
Weekend Warriors – Weekend Warriors is for those who are unable to make the Friday Night Fights and still want to throw down. Weekend Warriors playdates are open all weekend, and there are no specific times and no specific consoles. It’s whatever people want to play at whatever time they’re available! Big thanks to Smurfee McGee for starting this and keeping it going.
So, this is where you, the community come in. As it stands we have nothing for Mondays and Thursdays, and I would love to see this change. There are dozens of multiplayer games out there right now and dozens more coming soon. Hell, Payday 2 just released and I know there are tons of Dtoiders already playing. It would be awesome to see a Thursday Night Throwdown or something to that effect with a bunch of community members playing Payday 2 or any other MP game. It’s easy to get started; you simply need to make a forum post over here by creating a new thread with the title of your event (e.g., Thursday Night Throwdown, Monday Night Mayhem, etc.) and then ask for volunteers to host some games. You don’t always have to host; we would just need someone to step in, be the leader of that specific community event, and on the day of the event make a quick blog post on the Cblogs. Here’s an example of what it could look like — it’s as easy as that!
I would absolutely love to see all these great community-run events become a major reason why people visit and join Destructoid, and with your help I know we can get there. If you’re interested in being a regular host or blogger for one of these events, or if you have one of your own in mind I would love to talk to you! Feel free to leave a comment below or shoot me a PM!
OK, enough with the shameless promotions, let’s get to the real reason why we’re here: the GAMES!
New to FNF? Read this! Each week, a bunch of us Dtoiders get together to play videogames online! It’s a 100% community-run event, so feel free to join in or even host something yourself!
The planning for FNF starts in the forums, where community members sign up to host matches and post their pertinent details (game, time, Gamertag, etc.). Then, every Friday, reminder posts go up in the community blogs thanks to a dedicated group of volunteers, and I recap it all here on the front page to give it a bit more exposure.
To join in, simply send a friend request to the match host! If you’d rather host something yourself, sound off in the comments section below!
