Funeral of a friend: Tales of Monkey Island Ep. 5

Recommended Videos

Wednesday night I went to a funeral.

Well, I wouldn’t exactly call it a funeral. When the deceased in question was, according to long time friend Dave Grossman, “struggling with an inventory item addiction,” it was more farcical than upsetting. After all, when someone tells you to dress up in black for the death of *spoilers* Guybrush Threepwood, it’s pretty hard to believe that the guy is really down for the count. And that appears to be the truth.  Guybrush Threepwood isn’t dead, per se. Things are a little bit more ethereal for the first portion of the fifth episode of Tales of Monkey Island: Rise of the Pirate God.

If you’ve come this far, I expect you are not phased by spoilers, so here it goes. Guybrush is dead, yes, but the whole initial portion of the game entails him returning to his body. Seems the formerly infected with LeChucken Pox are now cured, but LeChuck is back to his old ways. NPCs are pissed that Guybrush has returned the evil pirate to his evil glory, so his body is currently holding up a dartboard in a tavern. Two things Guybrush has to do: get his body back and stop LeChuck. Problem is, nature doesn’t want him to return, since he’s technically dead. Every time he gets his body back, due to an amulet, it either sends him back to the underworld, or he’s killed by zombie fearing citizens. La-dee-da.

And that’s pretty much all I saw, as far as the game goes. Keep an eye out when it launches for PC on December 8. As for the WiiWare version, Telltale is looking to have it released by Christmas, with the season compilation sometime early next year. I asked about a WiiWare disc compliation, and it’s not officially planned, so don’t expect it. A port to other consoles was, unfortunately neither confirmed or denyed, but I was promised that Telltale would be making an announcement within the next couple of weeks.
