Gearbox says reports of Borderlands 3 Switch’s 62GB file size are “technically incorrect”

The best kind of incorrect

Borderlands 3 is out on Switch this week, and it doesn’t seem bad! The bar has been set kind of low for Switch ports recently with Mortal Kombat 1, but BL3 managed to exceed it, and then some. The actual file size of the port has eluded many though, especially with reports of a physical edition that has a big old “62 GB” bit of text emblazoned it. Thankfully, Gearbox has set the record straight, noting that Borderlands 3: Ultimate Edition is indeed 23.5GB on Switch

How much space does Borderlands 3 take up on Switch?

Here’s the full tweet, straight from the horse’s mouth:

We’re seeing technically incorrect reports that Borderlands 3 Ultimate Edition file size on Switch is 62 GB. Actual file size is 23.5 GB. We had to submit a file size at packaging time but kept working to optimize it. Exact breakdown:

Total: 23.5 GB
Base game: 8.5 GB
DLC: 15 GB”

That explains the 62GB reports! The port team apparently had to submit a maximum figure but were able to squish it down to roughly half of that. Getting the entire package down to less than 25 GB on Switch is impressive. It’s not a direct comparison by any means, but the base game requires a minimum of 75GB on PC, and the DLC brings that figure to well over 100GB.
