GOG updates, warns Australians, and hands out free game

GOG.com warned Australian gamers on Facebook today that on Friday at 15:00 GMT, the pre-order price of The Witcher 2 will go from $42.27 AUD to $62.99 AUD because of “licensing reasons” they can’t elaborate upon. It involves the Australian edited version of the game though, but if it makes you feel better: mods will no doubt fix that right up for you.

Because the Australian price is still higher than what people in the U.S. pay for the game in dollars, Australian purchasers will receive $26 USD store credit according to the Facebook comments on GOG’s side. Also, as part of their spring update you can grab the classic MicroProse adventure Dragonsphere for free right here!

The update adds Private Messaging functionality to the service as well, which looks straightforward enough. More importantly, GOG.com now has a new and optional downloader. This nifty little thing offers multi-threaded downloads for increased download speeds, error checking for those with spotty connections, and should be very light on your resources.

It looks like the new downloader works as advertised, as it downloaded Dragonsphere at about 8MB/s in 10 seconds. Good stuff from GOG all around!

[Thanks Paroxysm!]
